RESEARCH

What is Bamboo?
  • Bamboo is a giant, woody, hollow-jointed type of grass.
  • Bamboo plants can be grown without the use of dangerous fertilizers and pesticides.
  • When the stem of a bamboo plant is cut, a new stem quickly grows to replace it.
  • A perennial evergreen, bamboo stays green all year round and grows every year.
What is a bamboo cup?
  • For people who are concerned about the problems throwaway coffee cups have on the environment, a reusable coffee cup such as a bamboo coffee mug is a good alternative.
  • Bamboo has been used for drinking water, juices, teas and other beverages for hundreds of years by people from many cultures.
Why we should choose bamboo cups?
  • Reducing Unnecessary Waste:
    • Purchasing a bamboo reusable coffee cup to get your takeout coffee is a great way to begin reducing the amount of waste you create every day. Although bamboo coffee cups are strong, durable, and reusable, they are also biodegradable. That`s a lot faster than the more than 50 years normal plastic-lined disposable coffee cups take to break down.

  • Bamboo Cups Can Save You Money:
    • At Starbucks, for example, you can get a 10-cent discount every time you have your coffee placed in your own reusable cup. Other coffee shops offer discounts of as much as 50 cents per serving for people with reusable cups. That means the cup will quickly pay for itself and actually put money back in your pocket, especially if you regularly use one.

  • Reduces Deforestation:
    • Most disposable coffee cups are made from paper. Meeting the need for tens of billions of disposable coffee cups each year requires cutting down a large number of trees.

  • Keeps Billions Of Cups Out Of Landfills:
    • Each year, countless billions of plastic-lined, paper-disposable coffee cups are tossed into landfills. If a growing percentage of regular coffee drinkers switch from paper, single-use disposable coffee cups to reusable bamboo cups, it can help to significantly reduce the number of coffee cups in overflowing landfills around the world.

  • Long-lasting and Reusable:
    • Buying bamboo cups is a good choice if you are looking for lightweight, non-toxic and eco-friendly drinking cups. Bobo&boo bamboo cups are reusable and will last longer when they are cleaned and used perfectly. For the bamboo cups to last longer, it is highly recommended to fully dry the cups after washing as this will prevent the water residues on the inner base of the bamboo cups. It is also advised to store them in a well-ventilated area and avoid locking in the shelves as it will cause moisture build-up.

  • Non-toxic and BPA-free:
    • All plastics in today`s market are manufactured using BPA, an industrial chemical. BPA is infamously known to impair and disrupt the immune system. In addition to this, Bamboo fibres from which the bamboo cups are made have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

  • Highly Durable:
    • Bamboo cups are highly durable since it is fabricated from natural bamboo fibre. Bamboo cups can be used to serve both hot and cold beverages.
Market Insight
  • The quest for more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and paper cups is driving the rising demand for bamboo cups. One of the primary reasons for bamboo cups` growing appeal is their capacity to suit the demands of ecologically aware consumers. As more people become aware of the environmental impact of plastic and paper cups, there is an increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives. As more people become aware of the environmental effects of plastic and paper cups, there is a rising demand for reusable and biodegradable alternatives. Investing in the bamboo cup market has various advantages for firms. Businesses may address the growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to plastic and paper cups by providing bamboo cups.

  • Summary
    • The market for bamboo cups is projected to grow significantly, reaching a value of US$ 48M in 2023 and US$ 190M by 2033 with a CAGR of 14.
    • The rising demand for bamboo cups is driven by the quest for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and paper cups, with a 7% forecasted growth period.
    • The growing appeal of bamboo cups is due to their ability to meet the demands of eco-conscious consumers.
    • As people become more aware of the environmental impact of plastic and paper cups, the demand for eco-friendly alternatives is rising.
    • As awareness of plastic and paper cup's environmental impacts grows, the demand for reusable and biodegradable alternatives rises.
    • Investing in bamboo cups offers firms several advantages.
    • Businesses can meet the rising demand for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and paper cups with bamboo cups, which are durable, reusable, and cost-effective.
    • Using bamboo cups can enhance business sustainability practices and improve corporate social responsibility and image.

PROCESS

Week 1 -
During the first week of this module, we did an ice-breaking section as a self-introduction between our classmates as well as for Mrs. Lilian to get to know each other better. In this module, we were put into 3 groups which included different specialisations, as we knew so far that we were working with groups of students from the Business School. So during our first meeting with the business students, they gave us a short presentation to let us know more about the concept they want to deliver to the public. Moreover, we discussed the requirements from the project brief that they had provided before the meeting. In return, we also asked a few questions to know better about the purpose of the product and the expectations for the design outcome that they are aiming for. After the meeting ended our group disturbed the roles in a team so that we would not crash our work. Furthermore, we also created a miro board for every one of us to share all the findings and work progression we have.

Week 2 -
This week, during class, when we were consulting with Mrs Lilian, we pointed out that we were consenting that the pricing of the bamboo cup given by our partner was too high for their target audience range of lower to middle-income individuals. On the other hand, for the personas that we created, she said it was good that we have considered and covered every expectation of all different kinds of people who would use eco-friendly products. Furthermore, from our market research, we found that bamboo cups have a big opportunity to invest in this area, as Malaysian bamboo products are more used in interior and construction buildings. Therefore, GEM will be the first and huge selling point in the Malaysian market in the future. So, we set up a meeting with the business school students at night to double confirm the pricing, target audience and what type of features the bamboo cups provide for us to design. Besides that, we also point out that if they need a prototype for their presentations we are unable to give them the physical item, but we will provide a 3D mockup video instead. After discussing the problems we are consent about we discussed the design aspect that we have been talking about for the logo, website, as well as packaging. In the end, we also request to communicate with the Mass Communication students for further discussion on the art direction for the social media post and poster etc.

Week 3 -
This week we continue our progression on Task 2 and start finding ideas for the packing, website, logo etc. as well as finding some references. In addition, we are going to make some improvements in our survey questions to get more useful information from it.

FEEDBACK

Week 1 -
For this week, we didn't receive any specific feedback from Mrs. Lilian since it was the first meeting with our clients. However, she told us to organise our process tidily on the blog as well as create a plan for our project.

Week 2 -
From Mrs. Lilian's feedback during the tutorial section, she encouraged us to have a few more meetings with students from the business schools to reconsider the pricing and the market we are targeting. On the other hand, for the personas that we created, she said it was good that we have considered and covered every expectation of all different kinds of people who would use eco-friendly products.

Week 3 -
This week, Mrs. Lilain pointed out some of the issues that we made including the problem statement being unclear, some of the questions in the survey can't cover all parts of the personas we expect to have as the design outcomes support our next process in the art direction. Other than that, everything is good to go.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

Week 1 -
We are going to work on the empathy map, research and discover more about this product, prepare the survey questions as well and create the personas we expect to get. In addition, we are told to make a project document for task 1.

Week 2 -
So this week we were told to finish the survey questions and send them out to the public to get responders. In the meantime, we are aiming to complete our empathy map. After collecting all the data, we will be doing the data analysis part and preparing as well as completing the slides & project document for next week's presentation.

Week 3 -
We were told to proceed with the next task which is Task 2 - Art Direction.

REFLECTION

This module, I felt it similar to the previous module that I had taken before the Minor Project, but to be honest, this task was quite a challenge for me due to the limited information we know from our partner the Business School students, I was kind of blur and don't know where to start from. So I started my research on what bamboo cups are and what the benefits of using bamboo cups as well as the market insight of bamboo cups in Malaysia. The process of researching is quite boring but I can say I have learnt a lot about bamboo and the Malaysian bamboo market. Although during the process we students from the Design School had doubts we managed to communicate with the Bussiness School students to make it clear and to make our progression move smoothly.  In my opinion, the overall experience during Task 1 is another level of understanding of the product.

On the other hand, I must say that all of my teammates are friendly and hard-working. We will always share If we have any questions or thoughts with each other to make improvements. Besides, we also split the work so that none of us would crash the work we were doing as well as having too much workload. Before the Task 1 submission, we were confused about what we needed to submit to Mrs. Lilian, but thankfully we all managed to get everything done before the class.
