LECTURE 6

In this week lecture, Ms Jinchi had briefed us on our project 1 title Self-Portrait. She had started with the question "Who am I ?" and there are some ways to know how many faces we have. For example, we can list it out by using a plan.

Figure 1 Slides from Ms Jinchi
After that, Ms Jinchi had show us a video that some students explain what is a self-portrait. In the video, they say that a self-portrait is not necessary must be our face. It can be anything that reflects ourselves like animals, shapes.

Youtube: Self-Portrait
After the video, Ms Jinchi explains the definitions of self-portrait. A self-portrait is a self-representation in the form of a drawing/ painting/ sculpture/ design. Besides that, it is an artwork that represents the designer/ artist. It's not necessary to create a realistic image of ourselves, but instead of it is often an exercise in self-exploration. Then, Ms Jinchi had shows us some examples.

PRACTICAL - Project 1- Self-Portrait

Research
In this design, I had inspired by shadow art and the glass layers art. For this reason, it shows that it may have two different meanings while we look at the object, same for this topic there may be some parts of us that we view differently from the point of ourselves and the point of others viewing us.

Figure 10 Myself mind map
This mind map, it shows 5 categories to describe me: My Thoughts, My Favourite Colours, My Interests, My Personality, How Other Look At Me.
  • 💭My Thoughts, the reason I had written Freedom is that I live in a very strict family. Most of the time my parents do not allow me to stay outside alone, hang out with my friends or choose the course that I like. They have made me feel like a fish in a small tank that restricts the place its swims. Hence, the three other bullet points represented people around me in my past years, they have high expectations of me. For not letting them down I will always try to prove myself to them that I can hit those expectations.
  • 🌈My Favourite Colours, I like those colours basically is because they are the only colours that make me feel calm and it will make me focus on everything I am doing. Besides, it also the colours for unknown things, for example, there may be some part of me that has not been discovered.
  • 🎨My Interests, the explanation for this is I have a keen interest in art and I would like to become my future career. On the other hand, Music is one of the things that help me along in the path of learning art.
  • 🌓My Personality, in this category, had been separated into two groups: Outward Appearance and Inner. The first group (outward appearance) is the way I will always force myself to be calm because most of the time I will feel anxiety and it will cause the people surrounding me to feel nervous, so it is a way that I try to make others comfortable while being with me like in groups projects or chatting in a group. Besides that, it is one of the ways to let others have fewer worries for me and make them think that "I'm ok". On the other side (Inner) is basically the real me, I am the kind of person that does not easily show emotions to others because I think it may cause trouble to others.
  • 💁How Other Look At Me, most of my friends had always thought that I am a carefree and happy person from the feedback provided by my friends.
Progression
I think the main subject for my self-portrait would be a scene of a forest and a cave with a big blue door. Then, I had come out with the idea of emphasising the meaning of The person named "me" that you see with your own eyes maybe is not be the real "me". My concept explanation for this design is to show the contrast between the true me under the clown's "mask" and how other people see me from their own perspective because whenever my friends or family members are around me I will make the atmosphere as good as possible that I could to make them feel easy.

In this design, I found an old photo frame that used to have my family photo, so I decided to use The Glass on the photo frame as the base of my self-portrait because it reflected as an invisible prison that restricted my freedom. After that, I sketched out the sketch, as The Door had represented the clown's "mask"(smile) and a strong shell that protect "me", while on the other side is people surrounding me thought I am a carefree person and the door can easily open(get to know the true me) by them; The Trees, is the way I had shown towards others and care about them to make them felt more comfortable, calm and peace while with me. At the back of the glass, I draw a Person sitting behind the door as my inner self and there is a Broken Heart behind the tree that shows lost hope and trust in others, with the Scratches are pain and scar that can't be gone in both mentally and physically sides.

I had used Acrylic Paint as my main media for the design because acrylic paint had represented my interest, Art. Next, I decided to use A thin light bar as the Truth to make the back of the glass shine to expose the person hiding at the back of the door. In addition, the two reasons I decided to use a long thin light bar are first to expose the person behind the door and secondly is only a few of them know the true back story although the light can expose the truth. The colours I used in the design are yellow, blue and black. The meaning of the use of Yellow has represented the Happy and Joyful Personality that others see me and the way I wanted to feel. Next, for Blue, it means there are some Secrets of mine that others did not know about and makes it mysterious. Besides that, it also reflected the negative emotion I usually have. Lastly, Black, used on the person and the heart have totally Lost Hope, Trust and they elt miserable in life.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

In this topic, it had been a hard time finding myself, but meantime it also help me explore and recognize more of the hidden faces that I never know. After doing this design I had felt calmer than before but still feel lost at some moment, but I will make it a precious memory or experience. In my point of view, the design must be well reflected myself because it is one of the fastest ways to find out if rather my design delivered the same message I wanted the viewer to receive. So, I think in this topic, It is one of the most direct learning processes to show the result as well as improve my skill or creativity by getting to know myself even better.
