Project 3 & Final Project // Visual Analysis

LECTURE 8

In this week lecture, Mrs JInChi Had briefed us on the final project we will be doing for the coming few weeks. then she explained the meaning of visual analysis and the purpose of learning it. Visual Analysis had known as a way to prove the understanding of the artwork and the knowledge of the principle of design used in that artwork.
As Mrs JinChi said there are a few steps to writing a visual analysis essay. First starts with Observation, then Analysis and last is Interpretation.
1) Observation
By looking at an artwork for some time without knowing the back story of it and looking at it as datil as possible. After that write it down as detail as possible what we had seen in that artwork.

2) Analysis
After looking at the artwork write down the design principles that are used in this design and show the evidence of the work and explain how it works for this design to be successful.

Fig 1.4 screenshot from the lecture video
3) Interpretation
Give examples that accordingly to this artwork, the story of the artwork or give some thoughts that we have while after looking at the artwork.

PRACTICAL - Project 3- Visual Analysis

Part 1 Visual Analysis:

Figure 1 Mona Lisa
Phase One: Observation

In this painting, the beautiful lady that sat and leaned gently on the chair in the centre had been known as the main subject of this artwork. She has a pair of attractive eyes that look slightly to the right and an elegant smile on her face. Other than that, it does not bring a feeling of violation towards the painting despite she was painted without eyebrows. If staring at the painting for some time it may give a feeling that she was moving and the gentle smile on her face will become an ironic smile.

Figure 4 - Close shot of the mouth
The smooth skin of the lady's face and hands have made the painting seem brighter and prominent.

Figure 6 - Close shot of the hand
Behind her is a view of mountain scenery, in this background, the distance of mountains creates depth for the painting, the pointy mountains in the front are clearly to be seen while the mountains that are further were blurred and faded into the background. Besides that, there is a crooked road connected with the mountains and a lake that connects with the road as a small arch bridge located right next to the lady’s right shoulder.

The details on the clothes she wears are fascinating and It has clearly shown the clothes folds on the sleeves and the gauze over her shoulder, therefore, the clothes have made the lady even realistic to viewers. Besides that, the details of the embroidery in the front have sketched out the shadow of the strings on the plainclothes, but in the meantime didn't make it complicated.

The hue of the painting is mostly green and brown and in a dull tone.

Phase two: Analysis

This painting is visually balanced. Overall, the colour palette of this painting creates harmony. In addition, the lines that create the foundation of the character is smoother and create contrast with the lines of the background that are rougher and thicker, bringing out the gentle personality of the character. There’s also a contrast between the character and the background, with the character being in a brighter tone while the background in a darker tone. The emphasise of this painting is the lady sitting in the middle. By the use of the Golden Ratio and The Rules of Third the lines had exactly placed on the lady’s face. Furthermore, the road and the clothes have created movement by using the curve line of the road that leads to the clothes, then the lines of the clothes have led the viewer eyes to the lady’s face.

Phase three: Interpretation

The painting, Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci (1452~1519) an artist from Italy in the early 15th century.
It is an artwork that breaks through the rules that it is ridicules to draw a portrait that below of the stomach and the perspective towards the beauty of the women. As been known that he was not only an artist but he was also worked as a draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor and architect. Therefore, he used some of the knowledge that he had learnt from other areas and applied it to this artwork. He applied the mathematical formulation into his artwork to get the perfect ratio of the model. In addition, the arch bridge, in the background can be explained as he may try to apply some of his artwork into the painting. Furthermore, the background had similarities used the painting style from the Northern Song.

Part 2: Design
Research & Idea Inspiration Then I came with a similar topic that talks about women and that is the power of a mother. It is a common topic in our current society. Mother can be said as one of the greatest positions for everyone. They are stronger than anyone else in both they're physical and mental. Thus, I find some images of mom power on Pinterest.
Progression
First, I sketched out my first design on paper. Then, I started my artwork on a piece of canvas and used acrylic as my media for this design. I first started the design by painting the background into the colour I wanted, Then, I draw out the outlines of the design from my sketch.
Figure 26 First sketch

Figure 27 Background
Figure 28 Outline
After finishing the outline I found it was not accurate to fit the work so I resketch my sketch and repaint the design on the canvas.

Figure 30 Redraw Outline
Then. I added detail to the design. After adding the details, I added more colours like yellow and green to the leaves.

Figure 32 Adding more colour to the leaves
Furthermore, I move the images into Adobe Illustrator and used the golden ratio to show the focal point in my design work.

Title: The Endless Love Rationale
My concept for this design I would like to present the great power of a mother. As in our society, there are lots of moms are working hard to raise their children well and create a better life for them. For example, single moms work hard to raise their children on their own limited ability or the knowledge they know to make life better. So, in this design, I used the sun, loops, door and leaves to present the relationship between a mother and a child. The sun had represented the love and warmth given by a mother towards their child; Though that the sun shines bright and shine but one day it will use up all the energy it has to the day its life ends, just like a mother gave all her love and warmth to make sure the child she raised have the ability to be independent.
The big blue loop is the mother while the small black loop is the child, it is represented like a mother that protects her child in her arms from the dangerous world and gives whatever she has to that child. In other words, the big blue loop is the river while the small black loop is the seed; The river is meant to be the limited strength and ability that a mother only has to make the seed grow well and grow up to be the one they wanted to be. The door in the back can be said as the bond between a mom and a child that can't be broken, it also can be explained as a mother giving birth to a child that lives in her womb for over 10 months and they have the closest relationship with one another. The leaves represented the child grows and protect their mother in return although they have remained as a child that never grown from the eye of their mother.

FEEDBACK
As Mr Charles said that the design is to use the thighs like the technique of the design to apply in the design work.

REFLECTION
In this project, I found difficulties in explaining the artwork I see into sentences but the process is fun and interesting. Looking and understanding at the artwork had taught me to learn how to look at the details of the artwork and putting questions like 'What is the purpose of this object that included in the design and how would it help that design to stand out?' 'What was the story behind this artwork?' 'What was the main message that the designer would like to share with the audience?' while looking at the artwork. Besides that, reading the back story of an artwork that I had seen without knowing it had become interesting and would like to understand more about the artwork as well as the artist or designer.
