Week 2 - Introduction to Composition [30 / 8 /2021]
In the second week of Digital Photography and Imaging Mr Fauzi introduced Basic Composition, Rule of Thirds, Golden Ratio, Composition in Framing and Cropping.

1. Introduction to Basic Composition
  • Focal Point - This is the main thing that wanted the viewer to see or to understand. A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first. Everything else becomes a supporting character visually. There are 5 methods for creating a focal point. 1. Colour 2. Scale 3. Isolation 4. Pointing 5. Framing. [Foacl Point: (Online References) ]

    • 2. Scale - To stand out the focal point from the rest by changing the size of an element to become larger or smaller.

    • 3. Isolation - Separating the focal point from the crowd. It is a type of framing.

    • 4. Pointing - A way to bring attention to something. For example, using a leading line to lead the eye to the focal point when other elements are positioned to direct the eye to it.

    • 5. Framing - As a boundary to set something apart the rest to clarify the focus point is being framed.

  • Scale & Hierarchy - Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

  • Fig.1.2_ Scale & Hierarchy (Week 2- Mr Fauzi Lecture Notes)[2 / 9 /2021]

  • Balance The Elements - A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it. Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly coloured elements.

  • White Space - White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition. White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

  • Rule of Thirds - Identified rule of third
[“The rule of thirds divides an image into nine equal parts, to create a 3×3grid (Hardy,2011).” It is a basic rule that to help image work keep balance, most photography, graphic design work and fine arts work follows the rule of thirds. These grids can give a graphic designer clearly divides in any kind of design page so that the designers can try to analyze how to make full use of the grids. The most important thing is to make sure the design page keep balance.] (Website)

    - Using two horizontal and two vertical lines.
    - Four intersection points. - Position the most important elements of the image at these intersection points, will produce a much more natural image.
