Week 4 - Harmony and Unity

In this week lecture, Ms Jinchi explained the use of both harmony and unity in Design Principles. First, she talked about harmony, the definitions of harmony are having the same characteristic with different elements, it will become simple but not change the elements in the design and it is a sense that the elements in the design fit altogether by having the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

Analogous Colours - Colours in the same family.

Next, is unity which refers to the repetition of particular elements in the design (colours, shapes or materials) to make all in one. Besides that, it usually happens when the elements are composed in a kind of balance and a sense of oneness.

For an instant, she gave the explanation in scale and proportion because they are important design elements in a design. Scale and proportion are both design elements that are involved with size. Scale refers to the size to make a specific unit of measurement. Two ways can be determined for scale: actual measurement and visual estimates based on comparisons.

Proportion is a relationship of two or more elements in a composition and the way to make contrast with others thought size, colour, quantity, degree or setting. It is usually used in both harmony and unity.
